Course Development and Instruction

ARH482: Archaeology and Community — University of Toronto, ON | Fall 2026

I am currently teaching a fourth year special topics seminar course titled Archaeology and Community that I developed. The following is the course description: What is community in archaeology? At first glance this may seem like a simple question, but it is actually a complex and often contested concept. Throughout this course, we will think critically about what communities are, who defines them, and why communities have become such an important part of archaeological research and practice. We will explore how archaeologists work with Indigenous nations, descendant communities, and local communities, and consider how these relationships shape archaeological knowledge, heritage management, and understandings of the past. The course examines community and collaborative archaeology in both theory and practice, asking what it means to collaborate with communities and how different approaches create both opportunities and challenges. Through foundational readings and case studies we will examine the many ways archaeology can contribute to contemporary community priorities and concerns, while also considering questions of power, authority, knowledge production, and data sovereignty. While the required readings and case studies assigned for this class primarily draw from North American example, students will also explore a community/collaborative archaeological project of their choosing (does not have to be based in North America) through their final research project. Ultimately, this course explores the many ways communities have found value in archaeology, the many ways archaeology can be mobilized in service of contemporary needs and aspirations, and how collaborative and community-centered approaches continue to reshape the discipline.

Course Material Development

Archaeology and Ethics Tutorial Materials— University of Toronto, ON | March 11, 2024.
Designed tutorial mateiral for ARH100: Introduction to Archaeology at the instructor’s request. Developed course materials introducing key ethical frameworks in archaeology, including stewardship, Indigenous collaboration, and cultural heritage protection. Incorporated discussion-based activities to support critical engagement with ethical case studies.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Tutorial Materials— University of Toronto, ON | February 5, 2024.
Created and implemented a GIS tutorial for ARH100: Introduction to Archaeology. Developed lecture content and facilitated two activity-based sessions focused on foundational GIS concepts and their application in archaeological research. Designed hands-on exercises to build practical skills in spatial analysis and data interpretation.

Field School Quercus Module — University of Toronto Missisauga , ON | Winter 2024
Designed and implemented a comprehensive online module on archaeological field schools for undergraduate students as part of ANT201: World Archaeology. Developed as a resource to support student access to experiential learning opportunities, the module includes guidance on identifying field schools, applying for funding, evaluating program quality and safety, and preparing for field participation. The module has since been incorporated into multiple archaeology and bioanthropology courses as a shared resource and has been continuously updated.

Teaching Assistant Experience 

I have served as a Teaching Assistant across multiple undergraduate courses in archaeology and anthropology at the University of Toronto. Responsibilities included leading tutorials, facilitating discussions, grading assignments, developing course materials and supporting student learning both in classroom and field settings.
